The Hong Kong Prize 2022

Hong Kong has become a leading film hub. Its films have won many awards at home and abroad, including the highest honor of the Cannes Film Festival – the Palme d’Or. However, it is a challenge to attract the best talent and support for local films. It is important to promote the development of the industry and encourage film production to create more opportunities for young filmmakers in Hong Kong.

The Hong Kong Prize is a major initiative to reward students for exploring diverse aspects of our city’s history. It is also designed to serve as a platform for the public to learn more about Hong Kong history through award-winning academic studies. The Hong Kong Prize aims to inspire more people to embrace and cherish our city’s unique culture and heritage.

This prestigious science and technology innovation award was established in 2022 by the Hong Kong Alliance of Technology and Innovation with title sponsorship from Bank of China (Hong Kong) Limited. The prize encourages scientific researchers to explore innovative research ideas, establish themselves in Hong Kong, and serve our nation and the world.

The prizes are awarded in the following five award fields: artificial intelligence and robotics, life and health, new materials and new energy, advanced manufacturing and FinTech. The winners of each award field will receive HKD 2,000,000, a certificate and a trophy. The award review is supervised by an independent Review Committee and Compliance Oversight Team, whose members are experts in their respective fields. They make independent judgments and objective evaluations to assess candidates’ scientific research achievements, their application and transformation as well as the social or economic value created.

In the news media, a number of local outlets have made headlines with their wins at this year’s HK News Awards. The runner-ups of the Best News Writing (English) category included a pair of in-depth articles by Li Bingcun, one on cross-border organ transplantation and the other on fertility perseverance for cancer patients. Business reporter Liu Yifan took the top spot in the Best Business News Reporting category for his piece titled Virtually Painful, which reveals the risks of cryptocurrency investments.

The Society for Hong Kong Studies (SHKS) is honoured to be selected by the International Convention of Asia Scholars (ICAS) as the host of the 2023 IBP Best Article on Global Hong Kong Studies. The SHKS is delighted to work with ICAS and other partners to develop this new international prize in the field of Hong Kong Studies. The prize will provide incentives for researchers and students to study the topic of global Hong Kong studies, thus contributing to the development of this field and further promoting our city as an international center of knowledge about Asia. The award will be presented at the ICAS 2019 in Hong Kong next October.
