Winners receive $500 and a certificate designed by New Yorker cartoonist Edward Sorel. They also have their stories published online and in the autumn 2024 issue of Overland. The judges would like to thank all of the entrants for their excellent work. They would especially like to congratulate our winning writer, Jennifer Gonnerman, whose story “Last Home Standing” tells the story of Jacqueline Tamaklo, one of the millions of people defrauded by predatory mortgage lenders. Her story is an important piece of socially conscious journalism that Overland is proud to support. The prize is made possible by the Hillman Foundation, which awards its annual Hillman prizes every spring.
