The Sidney Prize and the Neilma Sidney Short Story Prize

The prize is named after Sidney Hillman, a labor leader who was committed to building “a better America.” The annual prizes are awarded by the Hillman Foundation in honor of journalists who “pursue investigative reporting and deep storytelling in the public interest.” This includes journalists whose work exposes injustices in our society such as police violence, poverty, inequality, racism, and the need for civil liberties and democracy.

In the words of New York Times columnist David Brooks, the winners of the 2023 Sidney Awards “have written some of the year’s best long-form essays. It’s a list that reads like a Who’s Who of American writers—writers who, over the years, have earned a reputation for writing about politics and culture in the uppermost echelons of publishing, at top-tier national publications. Hilton Als writes for The New Yorker and Ed Yong writes for The Atlantic.”

Established in 2000, the Sydney Taylor Manuscript Award honours the legacy of Dr Maurice Goffman, a distinguished scholar of Australian and Jewish history and literature. The prize is presented annually to the author of a manuscript on any topic in Australian and Jewish studies that has been submitted for assessment during the previous academic year and deemed to be of sufficient merit by the Selection Committee.

The Board of Social Study and Training Scholarship was established in 1941 with funds from the Board which preceded the University of Sydney in training social workers and supplemented in 2006 by donations in memory of Eva Byrne, a dedicated social worker who contributed to NSW State Government policies on issues of the day including immigration, child protection and indigenous rights. The scholarship is awarded to a third year student who achieves the highest aggregate mark in the Bachelor of Social Work degree.
