However, the project has been marred by cost blowouts, delays, design criticism and heritage concerns.
A petition against the redevelopment has already garnered more than 10,000 signatures and has been supported by local MP and former swimming champion Jenny Macklin. The petition highlights the impact that the pool’s closure would have on families and community members, as well as the economic and social benefits it provides. It’s not the only problem facing Sydney’s public swimming pools – many are closing due to neglect, financial pressures and high operating costs.
